How does this copyright thing work? I've never done such an act before. I've got plenty of original work of mine lying here.. I'd love to know more about this copyrighting stuff.. can you please elaborate a bit about it?

When you upload an image to your site or some other places people can save them and maybe share them on DC++ or some other file sharing. While you cannot protect an image from being downloaded, you can add a copyright note to it. This way people will know that the image is copyrighted and if they still share it, at least it will have your domain name or copyright on it, so people will know it is your work.
